The Centre of Biosciences SAS took part once again in the European Researchers’ Night 2025.
Our Bratislava institutes – the Institute of Molecular Physiology and Genetics and the Institute of Animal Biochemistry and Genetics – joined forces at the Old Market Hall with the theme:
“The Cell: Chaos That Makes Sense.”
Visitors explored how cells generate and transmit electrical signals in neurons and heart cells (cardiomyocytes). Even though the inside of a cell might seem like a chaotic ion–molecule “soup,” ion channel proteins carefully guide the flow of ions, enabling the generation of action potentials – the key communication signals in nerve and muscle cells. They also learned how the brain transforms chaos into order, giving rise to thoughts and memories.
Researchers further introduced the role of yeasts as model organisms, highlighting their importance in understanding biological processes and their applications in biotechnology, such as the production of medicines, biofuels, or nutritional supplements.
The Institute of Animal Physiology represented the Centre in Košice, at the OPTIMA shopping centre, with the theme:
“Fertilization Is Not a Matter of Course.”
Visitors discovered the fascinating world of fertility research, learned about biological, lifestyle, and environmental factors affecting reproduction, and explored the most sensitive stages of development – from egg maturation to embryo implantation – through 3D models and hands-on lab demonstrations.
We thank all visitors for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and support for science!
