The Summer School for Young Scientists

The Summer School for Young Scientists, organized by the civic association All4Science, focused this year on one of the most pressing global issues – water as our most valuable resource.

Researchers from 13 institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences dedicated five full days to working with 41 students from all over Slovakia. In collaboration with WWF Slovakia, participants attended lectures and engaging discussions about the protection of freshwater ecosystems. In a simulated debate, students represented various stakeholder groups – from environmentalists and fishermen to farmers and local mayors – and practiced finding compromise solutions. This unique experience highlighted that nature conservation must go hand in hand with open communication and mutual understanding.

We wellcomed three talented high school students at the Department of Biophysics and Electrophysiology at the Institute of Molecular Physiology and Genetics. They had the opportunity to explore various laboratory techniques – from basic electrophysiology to working with a confocal microscope. Together, we discovered the fascinating world under the microscope and shared a glimpse into the everyday work of neuroscience researchers. This is the kind of summer we love – full of curiosity, learning, and discovery!

We thank the organizers, mentors, and students for making this event a success – and we’re already looking
